"What Happened on the Hill," relates the story of the Virgin Mary's appearances to six children in Bosnia-Herzegovina and the response of the community, and ultimately, the world. The work was premiered in Los Angeles on the UCLA campus in June 1999. Donald Neuen conducted the combined 200-voice UCLA and Angeles Chorales, the UCLA Philharmonia, with soloists Juliana Gondek, Gary Bachlund, Peter Atherton, and Michael Piontek.

 Born in Dublin, the son of a successful band leader and trumpet player, and himself the winner of the National Talent Contest, David Parkes was intent instead on becoming a professional soccer player. With a voice described by one critic as "too good to be confined to these shores", David prepared for a move to America.
In November 1992 David released his first album in the United States "Let Me Live". The recording of this beautiful pro-life song was the fulfilment of a promise he had made while in Medjugorje in gratitude to God for the great healing, which had occurred.
David has sung to audiences of up to 30,000 people live when Mother Teresa requested he sing for her historic visit to Knock and he has been a guest on "Songs of Praise" the weekly BBC programme with viewers of up to 88 million worldwide. ........more

Since his miraculous spiritual and physical healing in 1989, David Parkes' life has been blessed, but far from carefree. His ministry takes David away from his beloved family for weeks at a time. David's oldest son, Ken, was born with Cystic Fibrosis, a debilitating disease for which there is no cure. After struggling with his illness all his young life, Ken was understandably frustrated, and he was angry with God. But God's love comes to us in unexpected ways. In 1997, Ken made his own pilgrimage to Medjugorje. Much like his father, Ken was a reluctant pilgrim and expected nothing from his trip. However, as Ken himself writes: "Our Lady embraced me with love, a love I never experienced before ...". At home again, Ken wrote "Far Away", a song he had started months before, but whose meaning became clear to him only as a result of his spiritual healing on a hillside in Medjugorje. Today, Ken awaits a lung transplant, his only hope of survival. He struggles for every breath and, though each day he becomes physically weaker, his spirit continues to shine bright. |

David Parkes is well known as a Christian recording artist. So why did he record an album of modern ballads and love songs? "I suppose, to be honest," he says, "to prove to people that one can also be inspired by some of today's songs." Before he dedicated himself to spreading the message of God's infinite love and mercy, David was a successful professional entertainer. He often observed how moved his audience was by some of these beautiful love songs. He recognized that this was a way to reach those who ordinarily would not listen to strictly Christian music. When heard from this point of view, the words of the songs take on an entirely new meaning. |

In 1989 David Parkes, having suffered from Crohn's Disease for 12 years and after enduring ten major operations, was given only weeks to live. But Our Lord and Our Lady had other plans. As a final gift from his friends, David and his wife Anne returned to the former Yugoslavia where they had spent their honeymoon. During the trip they visited Medjugorje, the "Oasis of Peace", and David experienced a miraculous cure. David Parkes will be the first to tell you that the miracle of his spiritual healing was equal to the physical cure. That God is always close to David is obvious. David Parkes now spends his time spreading the word that God, in his mercy, is always close to each of us. |

Recording these familiar, favorite hymns took David Parkes back to his teenage years when, as a choir boy at St Paul's Church in the heart of Dublin, rehearsal was on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in preparation of High Mass on Sundays. Another memory brought to mind was the first Saturday of each month when the children would gather for their sodality meeting at Holy Angel's Church. With 1000 girls on the left side of the church and 999 boys, plus David, on the right, they would sing "We Stand for God" and "Faith of Our Fathers" at the top of their voices! |
